 Brent Mini?
Author: Max Martin

I'm in the middle of reading Valis, and I've been intrigued by the descriptions of Brent Mini's music. I wanted to know if anybody had any insight/theories as to whether Brent Mini is supposed to be analogous to any real composer of electronic music, or whether there are any composers who create minimalist/ambient music similar to his "Synchronicity Music." The only person who comes to mind immediately for me is Brian Eno.

I'm sure that Brent Mini is explicitly stated as being analogous to Brian Eno somewhere, either by Dick or a biographer/critic. I can't recall where I've read it at the moment though. If I come across the quote again I'll post it here.

Dick and friends listened to Brian Eno (can't remember what album, but certainly very much minimalist) and saw the film The Man Who Fell to Earth and then tried to discover the meaning in it (Radio Free Albemuth, the film, has many similarities in style with The Man).

The character is, therefore, somewhere between Eno and Bowie (not as strange as it seems, Eno and Bowie worked together and some of Bowie's 70s albums are half-filled with instrumental tracks.)

Also, remember that Albemuth was written before VALIS, but only published after Dick's death, years after VALIS. Most readers would never have heard of Albemuth.

Grab a copy of Divine Invasions. They talk about it in there.

Cheers.

If there was a dictionary entry for "Synchronicity Music" I can only imagine that a photograph of Robert Fripp would accompany it. Throughout his long career he has used unconventional time signatures and a mesmerizing rythym guitar style that reminds me a lot of the electronic music described in VALIS. In particular I'd recommend a trio of albums released in the 80's titled "Discipline", "Beat", and "Three of a Perfect Pair" by the band King Crimson (Fripp was an original member and still records with them). Admittedly jazz/fusion seems to have had it's peak in the 70's and 80's but I always though it was the perfect mate to quality sci-fi.

It's funny that both Brian Eno and Robert Fripp have been mentioned, because they did several records together under the name Fripp & Eno, which I usually listen to when I read Dick (if I'm not listening to Brian Eno's Ambient series).

That is quite an amusing coincidence Max. My earliest introduction to Fripp and his "Frippertronics" was Peter Gabriel's second solo album in 1978. I had no idea that he worked with Eno. Or is this that anamnesis that the gnostic Dick sometimes referred to ?

Brian Eno actually created the "Frippertronics" as a system of delays when he and Fripp first recorded together, shortly after Eno had left Roxy Music. Eno and related musicians have always been particularly interesting to me, so it's pretty neat that there are all these connections amongst them and my favorite writer.

Bowie's "Low" and "Heroes" and Fripp's "Exposure" - all produced by Eno within a short period of time. I read an interview with Eno where they were meant to be kind of like a trilogy in that himself, Bowie, and Fripp were all at this same place with what they were doing musically. The cover to Low was taken from The Man Who Fell to Earth.

So much was revolving around Eno during that period. That's the only period of time where I went out and bought something unheard because of who produced it rather than the musicians playing on it. It's nice to read of the connection between Dick and the music. I've suspected it but was never sure. Like you others, I often was listening to jazz fusion or the progressive rock type of thing when reading sf, especially Dick. It was good for watching football games with the sound turned off also, haha.

if you all are interessed in music, check the topic 'PKD and Sonic Youth'. I renewed it, but maybe now is in the older topic area.
enjoy it

I've never heard his music myself but am intrigued by what I've read about him and his PKD influenced sound.

i think dick was deffinetly referring to electronic music, the music of no boundries, i suppose electronic music really started in the 70's by the 80's there were various modular synthesisers being used to create sounds never heard before . valis was published in 1981 in which the electronic music phenomenon really started getting popular

i think autechre are the best electronic musicians today, they create sounds and rythmes which are so complex and atmospheric. you could call it Synchronicity music.
