FIRST PUBLICATION

HISTORY:

The manuscript for "Fair Game" reached the SMLA one day after that for "Prominent Author" on the 21st Apr, 1953. The Agency must’ve had some difficulty placing the story as it was not published until Sep 1959 in If. After that, the fate of "Fair Game" was that of many of PKD’s early short stories: oblivion until THE COLLECTED STORIES in 1987. Comments on the story are non-existent.

Professor Douglas is the top physicist in the world, not worried by the young upstarts. But when a giant eyeball peers in his window and bars of gold and pretty girls appear from nowhere he succumbs to his fate as mankind’s top representative to an alien civilization. Or, at least, that’s what he thinks. To the aliens, though, he’s another kind of catch.
