HISTORY:

"Out In The Garden" is pure fantasy. The fable of Leda and the Swan retold but with a duck this time. July 31, 1952 is the date the story arrived at the SMLA. It was sold to Fantasy Fiction magazine and printed for the first time in the Aug 1953 issue. No one seems to have commented on it that I can find and other than a brief appearance in the anthology SATAN’S PETS in 1972 it was not brought back into print until THE COLLECTED STORIES OF PKD in 1987. Due to its style and the slight nature of the story it is possible that "Out In The Garden" was one of those short fantasies that Kleo refers to as having been written before she met Phil; perhaps written in 1950 or 1951.
