FIRST PUBLICATION

HISTORY:

Another practically forgotten story, "Martians Come In Clouds" arrived at the SMLA two days after "Progeny" on Nov 5 1952. This story was originally titled "The Buggies" but by the time of publication in the June-July 1953 issue of Fantastic Universe the title had changed to "Martians Come In Clouds." After its initial printing the story was not seen again until THE COLLECTED STORIES in 1987.

In the subtle kind of fear that PKD evokes in this tale – call it xenophobia – we see echoes of "Beyond Lies The Wub," and also, more explicitly, THE WORLD JONES MADE. The fear that Jones stirs up at the sight of the drifters in THE WORLD JONES MADE and uses to his political benefit, is in "Martians Come In Clouds" only just beginning to be realised. It’s as if the Martians in "Martians Come In Clouds" were the very first drifters to appear in Jones’ World.
