Thirty years gone. My wife Andy and I were both struck by the tenderness with which Phil drew his characters. It was endearing. It felt like Phil really cared about them. He understood their listlessness, frantic strivings, self destructiveness and unexpected acts of kindness – even as he teased them to the limits of human and Ganymedean Slime Mold endurance. Adrift in deep space, eking out a dull living on habitable planets with no other redeeming features, conscious in half-life (the result of artificially retarding the act of dying), seduced into hallucinogenic worlds full of boundless promise… just beyond an intangible, seemingly sentient, nightmarish menace. Here’s to a Phildickian future.

We hunkered down in that trackless tram, plonked down in the middle of the wild, mutilated forest – outlaw country – post-apocalyptically disconnected from the grid. Dark shadows strobed from our guttering candles as we hunched over, quills poised above rough, hand-pressed parchment. Peering through failing eyes we painstakingly scribed. Each precious paperback was short. The sheer number of them formidible. An amphetamine-fuelled, mystically inspired outpouring from 1950 until Phil’s consciousness completed it’s expansion into nothingness. On the 2nd of March 1982 the “acosmic pan-enthiest” swallowed whole the mind of God. We pulp raw wood upon which to display the luminescent fiction. We continue to scrawl with gnarled, arthritic fingers. Over and over and over. The Phildickian canon must be preserved…

p.s. Andy and I had “UBIK” engraved on our wedding rings. She’s with Phil now.
